A brave leap from big company to pioneering startup — Timo Lehto’s journey with Starship began two and a half years ago and continues to offer something special to his life. As his product manager, he has the opportunity to build in-house products that don’t yet exist in the world. Together with his team, he is building the future of his Starship by exploring the unknown. every day.

After working for a large maritime logistics company for over ten years, Timo Lehto decided to join Starship to help make low-cost, convenient and sustainable shipping accessible to all. As his Manager of Products in Helsinki, Timo drives software development for autonomous equipment fleets and related products and solutions.

In winter he happily heads north to the mountains for downhill skiing. This is a common concern of all members of the Leight family, as are saunas, fireplaces, and his games at night on the board.

What’s the best thing about your job?

“The part where you have to look ahead. The constant adaptation of providing a human element to a system with changing roles is intriguing. As the system evolves, we start to expect different things.Exploring the unknown is very exciting. .”

Tell us about Starship culture. What is the difference from other companies?

“For me, it’s very unique in that we all share the same goals. No extra politics or arguments. To have worked for a company that was so clear where we were going.” No, and everyone will do their best to get us there.”

What do you consider to be the most important projects you’ve been involved in?

“I’m very interested in situational awareness. We need to be able to deal with any issues that arise, and it’s an ongoing and fun challenge.”

Do you think there is life on other planets?

Life probably exists on other planets and possibly even at this exact time. Though intelligence is more difficult and less likely to be found. Billions of years have passed since life began on Earth, and only in the last 100 years has communication with the rest of the world been possible. The risk is therefore that the civilizations will miss each other in time.

Tell us about the Helsinki team!

“Like most teams on Starship, the Helsinki team is international. My teammates come from all over the world, but very few of them actually speak Finnish. It was my first time being part of such a team, but now that I’ve been here for two and a half years, I can say that representing multiple cultures has been invaluable. It gives a fresh perspective and a wider angle to solve.Oh yeah we have breakfast every Wednesday. It’s fun!

Speaking of the Helsinki team, we’re really looking at expanding our fleet by creating a new cross-functional team of software engineers, product designers, data analysts, and product managers.Join Timo’s team and join us on our extraordinary journey here.
